Failure is common in the business world. In fact, 70% of all business organizations have experienced it in one way or another. Assembling a crew of people (each with different traits and characteristics) to work together on a project has never been an easy task – but it has been done many times before. All it requires is for both management and workforce to put effort into conducting themselves appropriately in a business setting. Has project management been a weakness for your company? Following are five keys to handling things like a professional.
- Respectful Communication – Communication is important in all aspects of life, and the same is true in the world of project management. If you are not able to relay all pieces of relevant information or convey a message in its entirety, then the chances of failure are significantly higher. Furthermore, if you are not able to establish the importance of respect for one another, then attempts at communication may eventually breakdown into a morale breaking cycle of toxicity. Ensure everybody’s ease of expression by upholding courteous behavior in any business setting.
- Stop Micromanaging At All Costs – It can be difficult to refrain from interfering with employees, but the habit of micromanaging your workforce is a destructive one. It serves as a huge annoyance to the workforce and indicates your lack of trust over their ability to get work done. Micromanaging will also result in a bogged down process, sapping everybody’s energy while wasting copious amounts of time. Make sure you have done enough explaining to make your goals clear, then empower your workers by trusting them to work towards it. If there are adjustments that need to be made, address them in private and allow the employee time and space to follow through.
- Multitasking Is A False Religion – There is no substitute for giving your full and undivided attention to the task at hand. It may seem like you are being productive, but the time it takes to refocus on each task is actually a huge time waster. Develop the habit of scheduling tasks and concentrating on each and every job you have one at a time. Don’t leave your seat until each task is done – then take a ten minute break to clear your mind, before diving into the next task.
- Prepare For, Then Handle, Change – One of the most constant things in this world is change. There are many aspects of life and business that are beyond our reach and/or control, and we are oftentimes at the mercy of these swirling tides. You must learn to swim, or else there is a danger of the project sinking and being lost to the depths. Approach each project expecting change to disrupt the flow and prepare yourself and the people around you to adapt when needed. Anticipating change is not an exact science, but it is better than being unexpectedly blindsided by unforeseen events.
- Make The Right Software Choice – These days there are countless programs and apps out there that are made specifically to help manage tasks and projects. Choosing to do things the “good old way” by avoiding computers and the Internet is like opting to fight uphill against a well-entrenched force. Strive for seamless collaboration between yourself and your colleagues by selecting the right app for your needs. Click here for a brief look at the most popular project management software to date.
