Social Media Screening : Be Careful What You Post

A survey made back in 2018 found that a good number of employers these days resort to screening job applicants by inspecting their social media (socmed) accounts in an effort to see if certain candidates would fit in well with the rest of the organization. It was noted that 70% of the respondents admitted to going online and surfing the profiles of potential employees during the hiring process – and nearly half of all respondents say they continue to check the socmed accounts of current employees on a regular basis. Put simply, everybody ought to be very careful about what they post on social media, as it may cost them their job, and in the most extreme cases, even future jobs.

It is now important to do some maintenance on social media accounts before looking for work. Everyone should expect employers to use every bit of information available to them when it comes to appraising applicants for a role. The big reason behind this is that social media accounts give unique insight into how one is as a person, therefore making the information voluntarily posted on a person’s profile very valuable. The most checked social media platform is LinkedIn because of its more work-centered approach – but even more personal platforms such as Facebook and Twitter are scanned frequently by modern day managements. It is also 100% legal for organizations to view public social media accounts, so the onus is on the job seeker to adjust by ensuring that their profiles are appropriate according to professional standards. After all, nothing screams “idiot” louder than losing a job opportunity just because you posted something questionable.

Some people prepare for this kind of situation by creating different accounts and separating their personal profile from their more career-oriented one. Furthermore, most socmed platforms include the option to set a profile to “private”, a setting that restricts access to information posted on an account, allowing more control over who gets to view the contents of any profile. All one has to do is simply set their personal profile to private and make sure only their closest and most trustworthy friends are connected – this way it becomes much more difficult for outsiders to view information that you may deem too personal for public consumption.
