…..People don’t like to work. Well, at least 80% of them anyway – according to this Forbes.com article, many studies have shown that only 1 out of 5 people actually enjoy doing what they do for a living. This is quite a sad statistic, because apart from sleeping, work is what people do most in their lives. And while anybody can easily tell another person to go find a job that they would enjoy doing, it’s not always possible to do so. Here are three things you can do to improve your level of enjoyment at work:
- Choose Happiness – Happiness is a choice – as people can choose to focus on either the good or bad side of things. It helps to try and meet workmates and forging friendships with them. Being around friends can inject new life into a stale setting and improve the way you feel about working at a certain place. Choosing happiness is also about avoiding negativity at all costs – this includes gossip, conniving, undermining, and manipulating others around you. Finally, always search for people who will give you honest, but constructive, feedback, and take it well when you receive it. Nobody is perfect and there is always something about you that can be improved.
- Only Commit To Things You Can Do – One major mistake many people often do is that they feel pressured to commit to things that they won’t be able to do. When this happens, work can become overwhelming to someone who agreed to accept more work than they can handle – and this often leads to people losing interest in the job, or worse, faith in themselves. It’s okay to tell your boss that you can’t handle that one extra task if it will sacrifice quality on all your other work. Keep your workload realistic and save yourself from being doomed underneath an endless trail of tasks.
- Know What’s Happening Around You – You will need to know what’s going on around you in order to do your work properly – but make your own effort to discover what you need to know rather than pestering everyone around you to tell you. First of all, everyone is just as, if not more, busy than you are. Second of all, it’s not their responsibility, it’s yours. Seek what it is you need to find and try to find a way to funnel information your way. You may also schedule weekly appointments with your boss so that you may ask important questions for which you need answers to.
…..But, if you successfully do all these things and still fail to find any redeeming quality at your workplace, then maybe it really is time for you to search for another job. Nobody wants to spend time being cooped up working in a toxic environment, with unfriendly people, and unreasonable bosses. Just make sure that you are not the problem.
