…..According to this report, spending at least 2 hours a week in nature makes people healthier. That said, it can be incredibly difficult for people to find the time and energy to actually relax outdoors – especially for those that have jobs. Do you long for time spent communing with mother nature – but feel like you just don’t have enough time? Check out these four suggestions that might help you squeeze a little time out of a tight schedule for a few precious minutes outside.

  • Ride A Bike – Instead of driving a car, hailing an Uber, or taking a train – why not start biking to work? This gives you a few precious minutes at the beginning of the day to breathe fresh air, clear your mind, and rejuvenate yourself for the work day. It can also reduce the stress of having to sit in traffic, pay for gas, and park your car.
  • Go On Breathing Breaks – Isn’t it ironic that those who take the most breaks to go outside are those with the intention to inhale harmful cigarette smoke? Create some time, preferably every 90 minutes, to step outside and breathe fresh air. If there are trees nearby, then it might be a good idea to stand next to it for an improved air quality. Take five deep breaths – inhale for three counts, exhale for six, and notice the wave of relaxation come over you.
  • Utilize Lunch Breaks – Eating lunch outside can help re-energize you for the afternoon stretch. It sounds simple, but every single minute spent outdoors counts towards your well-being.
  • Enjoy Your Transition To And From Work – Learn to take the moments in between work and home life in order to step back and appreciate the nature around you. Spend a moment or two alone outdoors, internalizing your day, and finding things to be thankful for. Making this into a routine will help organize thoughts and give you a little space to adjust from work mode to relaxation mode.

…..Sadly, even if you are able to do the above-listed activities during the workweek – it may still not be enough. It’s a good thing weekends exist for this very purpose. Though you may be limited on days you have work, use your free weekends to catch up with mother nature. Plan and prepare throughout the week by doing research on outdoor activities and give yourself something to look forward to. This is also a good opportunity to invite your work friends so that you all can benefit from it while improving your relationships with each other.
