Five Keys To Effective Remote Hiring

As the current global coronavirus pandemic rages on, businesses all over the world have realized the need to begin transitioning to “the new normal” – the name given to a world specifically adjusted according to the challenges posed by life during lockdown. Although there has been some progress towards improving our CoVid-19 testing capability and response, there is still no telling when a vaccine will be ready for widespread use. In other words, these strict social distancing rules will be around at least for the next year or so, making it necessary for humans to adapt and survive in a work from home setting. Following are five keys to effective remote hiring:

  1. Make Sure Applicant Meets Minimum Technical Requirements – The first challenge of remote work is making sure that the applicant has everything they need to do the job properly. This usually includes a decent computer and a high-speed internet connection – but employers may require more depending on the job at hand. Sometimes, employers are willing to shell out money to help prepare an applicant for the job, but for the most part, it is the applicant’s responsibility to be ready for the work they apply for.
  2. Identify People That Are Well-Suited For Remote Work – There is a type of person that is well-suited for remote work – someone who displays excellent communication skills, is a natural collaborator, well-organized, and a reliable time manager. They must also know how to exercise discipline and be responsible for the tasks they need to accomplish every day. Without these basic characteristics, there is no way a person could fulfill their remote tasks reliably.
  3. Identify People With The Skills Needed For Their Role – After it is established that an applicant has what it takes to be an efficient remote worker, the next step is determining whether they have the skills necessary for their role or not. When writing job descriptions, include a section that describes the perfect prospect. That will make it easier for applicants to visualize what a company is looking for and decide if they will be a good fit or not. For example, when looking for a customer service representative, they must be great at connecting with clients and exercising self-control during heated moments with irate customers.
  4. Have Prospects Prove Themselves During Paid Trial Working Periods – If an applicant shows potential, put them to the test before hiring them. Hire them on a short-term contract for the purpose of evaluation and use the time to see whether the prospect will respond positively during the first months of their involvement. If everything goes well, then the prospect is regularized into the workforce and becomes an official part of the team.
  5. Provide A Positive Applicant Experience – It is always in the best interest of a company to make sure that all applicants have a positive experience when applying for work with them. The hiring process can be a stressful thing for people who are hoping to land a job, so showing empathy, compassion, and understanding are particularly important – especially during these crazy times. Never rush an applicant through the process – always take the time to focus on their application. Help each applicant put their best foot forward, and if they were promised a return call, make sure they get it.
