The post-pandemic economy is getting ready to launch – and one of the major disruptions arising from it is the new hybrid work setting where people who ended up working remotely during the strict Covid-19 physical distancing protocols will still be allowed to do part of their work at home but will be expected to come into work physically for certain tasks. This is ideal in the sense that it balances the needs of both employer and employee while avoiding a jarring return to full time office work. However, just like anything else there will be challenges to overcome, such as keeping the team spirit alive as well as putting in place a system that promotes equity in the workplace. - Face-to-Face Training Sessions – A hybrid work setting means that work tasks are completed at home on some days and in the office on others. There are some employees that still prefer being coached in person as opposed to through a video call. Make sure to provide days where employees can opt to come into the office to learn or work beside other colleagues. Doing so will give workers a choice and allow them to make the most of their options.
- Forge Principles to Abide By – Help employees make the right decisions by forging a set of principles for them to adhere to. Let good values guide you when choosing which principles are important, then make sure to include some reasoning as to why it is vital to observe them. Do not forget to include principles that touch on the different tasks each employee is doing – as each person has a different nature of work. Try to choose policies that champion fairness, flexibility, customer focus, and efficiency. These will go a long way in letting your workers know what the right thing to do is.
- Help Team Members Form Relationships – The best way to get your employees to form real relationships with one another is to provide different ways in which your people can socialize with each other and work on tasks together. By giving them shared workloads, you open them up to having to really interact and get to know the “humans” behind the worker. This will help make your employees feel more connected, which can help improve teamwork across the organization.
- Be Open to Experimentation – If you really think about it, for most companies, remote work was just an experiment in the field of work/task completion forced by the pandemic. Much has been learned in the past year – and it seems that while it is possible to accomplish work from home, there are probably certain tasks better off done in the office. Hybrid work is just another experiment. Employees may take to hybrid work more easily if they notice that management is willing to approach things in ways that have never been tried before. If they feel like things are open enough, they may also provide useful feedback. Always be open to trying out new styles or systems that may be helpful because the only thing constant in this world is change.
- Build Trust – The last and most obvious component to a progressive working environment is always trust. It is suggested that a work culture built on openness, the presumption of good faith, remaining connected, and prioritizing integrity should be maintained to build trust amongst employees. Teams that do not trust each other are doomed to fail – and if management feels like someone cannot be trusted, then that person probably does not belong in your company.
