Only a year has passed since the coronavirus pandemic, but the uncertainty and fear surrounding life as we currently know it has opened the eyes of many. The pre-Covid world is a thing of the past – as new realities drive the search for renewed purpose in life and at work. As the realization sets in that money should not be the sole reason a business should exist, organizations have started to shift to a paradigm that prioritizes humanitarian pursuits along with profits, “being real” with people first before everything else. Following are five movements that are expected to take root this year:
- ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS – People are used to companies talking about this and that – and while that used to inspire people, it also became evident that many establishments fail to actually “walk the walk”. These days, people want to see action before anything else. Before announcing that you are committed to making a positive impact on society and/or the environment, do something first to prove it. This will help show that your company is putting its “money where its mouth is”, indicating an authentic interest in doing your part to improve the world.
- INDUSTRY ALLIANCES ARE IN – It was during this past year that it became evident that companies needed to work together instead of competing against each other. With current news events being filled with stories of hate crimes, rising infection rates, and Covid-related deaths, many establishments, even those in direct competition, felt the need to form alliances for the purpose of contributing to solutions for many different modern societal issues. While big business took the lead in making the most memorable and recognizable industry alliances intended to address world concerns, there were also numerous instances that small-to-medium sized enterprises (SMEs) joined forces to make a positive impact on the lives of people around them, becoming unsung heroes in their various communities.
- PEOPLE OVER PROFIT – Whereas maximizing profits for partners used to be the main thrust of all corporate entities, this no longer holds true for modern day businesses. People no longer want to go back to life the way it was pre-pandemic – they want things to change for a better future. The new direction is to reprioritize towards solutions that do good by the people that make each establishment tick, whether they be employees, clients, partners, and communities. When done effectively, this kind of system can draw support from like-minded individuals who feel good about throwing their support behind a company that chooses humans over money.
- GET EMPLOYEES TO “BUY IN” – Since the world has shifted to a remote work reality, it is harder for companies to monitor their workers effectively. That is why the best way to ensure that employees are doing their part is to get them to “buy in” to your corporate culture and purpose. And what better way to win the hearts and minds of your workforce than to show them that you care directly, by providing benefits and incentives that improve on the welfare of the employees themselves? This goes a long way in showing that you genuinely care for the people around you, and who would not want to support a person like that? Once your employees are engaged and raring to work for you, they will become the proof of the humanity in your leadership – and it is only a matter of time before others see the goodness in your intentions.
- LIVE YOUR STORY – Companies all over the world like to tell stories about how they are drivers of change, but it is far less common to see actions attached to these stories. Being a faker in this day and age is a death-knell for any establishment. People are tired of long-winded stories that cannot be proven one way or another and are seeking authenticity behind corporate motives. The best way to tell your story is to live your story by acting first before talking about it. 2021 is all about transformations – of people, of companies, and of entire industries. The time has come to match all the talk of improving the world with both large and small-scale acts that serve to prove your commitment to your purpose and to humanity itself.
